Session: But What If I’m Literary? Adjusting Marketing Strategies When You’re Not in a Commercial Genre

Format: Video

Audience: All Levels

Indie authors are often counseled to produce a high volume of work, price competitively, do giveaways, and advertise. But if you’re a literary author, you might find these strategies either impossible or ineffective. This session addresses how you can modify the usual indie author marketing advice for a more realistic and successful approach, whether you write novels, short stories, or poetry.

Jane Friedman

Jane Friedman has 20 years of experience in the publishing industry, with expertise in business strategy for authors and publishers. She’s the co-founder of The Hot Sheet, the essential industry newsletter for authors, and has previously worked for F+W Media and the Virginia Quarterly Review.

Jane’s newest book is The Business of Being a Writer (University of Chicago Press); Publishers Weekly wrote that it is “destined to become a staple reference book for writers and those interested in publishing careers.” Also, in collaboration with The Authors Guild, she wrote The Authors Guild Guide to E-Publishing.

The Hot Sheet is an email newsletter  available only by subscription, delivered every other Wednesday at midday. It provides top-grade publishing industry analysis to authors (both traditional and self-published), freelance editors and writers, as well as those serving writers and publishers—such as literary agents and ghostwriters.

The Hot Sheet is written by Jane Friedman and Porter Anderson. Jane is  the former publisher of Writer’s Digest, a university professor, and an instructor with The Great Courses. Porter is a journalist, formerly with CNN and the Village Voice, and now the editor-in-chief of Publishing Perspectives.
